“It didn’t affect operations globally, only the US website and some temporary stoppage on the email and phone networks; we are gradually resuming operations,” a Cosco spokesperson told Seatrade Maritime News.
According to local US media, the network breakdown started at Cosco’s Pier J terminal at the Port of Long Beach. There has also been some slowdown in communications between the carrier’s US operations and its customers as exchanges have had to be moved to phone communications from emails, the report added.
“Due to local network breakdown within our America regions, local email and network telephone cannot work properly at the moment. For safety precautions, we have shut down the connections with other regions for further investigations,” Cosco said in a customer notice on its global website.

All Cosco’s vessels are operating normally and main business operation systems are stable, the company said as it pointed out it had taken effective measures to control the issue.
“Except for above regions affected by the network problem, the business operation within all other regions will be recovered very soon. The business operations in the affected regions are still being carried out, and we are trying best to make a full and quick recovery,” Cosco concluded.
The infamous “Not-Petya" ransomware attack on Maersk’s operations last year took nearly a month to recover from and reportedly cost the line about $250m.
