Ferry resumes, but 101 vessels still stranded in Houston spill
Following the collision and subsequent bunker oil spill in the Houston channel, the Port of Houston remains closed as of yesterday evening (local time), with 46 outbound and 47 inbound vessels immobilised at the Port of Houston. Five inbound and three outbound vessels are also unable to transit at the Port of Texas City.

Meanwhile, 27 response vessels have been deployed as well as 539 personnel on the scene and another 218 responding in the incident command post.
So far, 71,000 ft of absorbent boom has been deployed to contain the spill, with an additional 192,500 ft made ready and 20,680 ft on order. The Galveston ferry, which provides key transportation services to the local populace, has been permitted to operate between 0700 – 1900hrs.

The spill, amounting to 196,000 gallons of oil, occurred following a collision between the Kirby-operated barge loaded with 924,000 gallons and under tow by motor vessel Miss Susan, and bulk carrier Summer Wind. The remaining oil has been pumped from the partially-submerged barge, and no hazardous compounds have been found in the air around the spill.
