New vehicle import terminal opened in Sumatra

New vehicle import terminal opened in Sumatra
Suggesting further potential for the domestic shipping industry Sumatra has opened a new vehicle import terminal at its biggest river port of Boom Baru.

According to local reports, the port, just over 100km from the capital of Palembang, is being operated by state-owned port operator Pelindo II, and has been built on 2,000sqm.

With a handling capacity of 300 cars per day, the terminal is seen improving distribution of new vehicles from assembly plants in Jakarta.

Shipping cars by sea via Jakarta’s Tanjung Priok port is a vast improvement over truck trailers which can carry only about 10 vehicles each. This cuts costs and delivery time to just 30 hours between Jakarta and Palembang.
