The 330-metre quay length terminal will have three 3,000-tonne berths and a warehouse. Annual throughput is expected to reach 2.33m tonnes.
The project is part of wider plans to develop another four new terminals in Wuhan, altogether costing a total of RMB1.5bn. The projects will result in 18 new berths at Wuhan, fifteen of 3,000-tonne and three with 5,000-tonne capacity. These terminals are expected to be able to handle 20 million tonnes a year, making up 20% of total throughput of Wuhan.
Meanwhile the Port of Qingdao announced that its 2012 half-year container throughput has exceeded 7m teus, while throughput tonnage has exceeded 200m tonnes. Qingdao will also spend more than RMB10 bn ($1.57bn) on port projects this year.
Among the plans are for 12 new berths to be built at the Dongjiakou port area. By the end of next year, Dongjiakou will have a capacity of 222.6m tonnes. By 2015, Dongjiakou's throughput will hit 300 m tonnes, while for the Port of Qingdao overall, throughput will reach 600m tonnes.
