General Average declared on containership Northern Jupiter after engine fire
General Average has been declared on an 8,400 teu German containership Northern Jupiter that suffered an engine fire on 4 January in the Malacca Strait.

A notice to customers from Ocean Network Express (ONE) said the vessel Northern Jupiter suffered a main engine fire on 4 January while sailing from Singapore to Port Klang, Malaysia. The fire was extinguished and the vessel towed back to Singapore on 9 January following a class survey and approval from the Malaysian authorities.

ONE said the Northern Jupiter arrived back in Singapore on 14 January and underwent a detailed inspection to assess damage to the vessel and its cargo, and the owner declared General Average on 17 January.

The vessel remains at anchor in Singapore. According to Equasis the vessel is owned by VC N Jupiter Shipping of Hamburg and managed by V.Ships.

“The owners have appointed Stichling Hahn Hilbrich (Hamburg & London) as Average Adjusters. They will be arranging for the collection of General Average securities from parties concerned in cargo, containers and bunkers,” ONE said.

The shipping line recommended customers to inform their cargo insurers of the development as soon as possible.
