The 2.7m teu capacity container terminal's cranes and box handling equipment will be powered by the renewable energy as part of Maasvlakte's zero on-site and off-site emissions strategy. All of the terminal's power will be supplied by European windparks.
The terminal's quay and yard cranes will all be electrified and its fleet of Lift-Autmoted Guided Vehicles (Lift-AGVs) will be powered by batteries.
The first commercial call at Maasvlakte II is expected in December 2014, with the Nuon Energy contract starting from 1 January 2015.
“We are very proud of our technological advances in making this the world’s first zero-emission terminal operation to improve the port environment and set the industry pace in sustainability” said APM Terminals Maasvlakte II md, Frank Tazelaar.
In a further move to reduce emissions, the terminal has leased 35 electric vehicles from Nissan to transport staff around the site: 16 five-seater vehicles and 19 two-seater vans.
