As shipowners rush to install scrubbers ahead of the 1 January 2020 global sulphur cap Yara has landed 200 to 300 scrubber deliveries over the last 36 months and expects this number to more than double in the coming years.
“Sales are up significantly in 2018, with anticipated revenue of NOK700m ($84.4m), and we expect this growth to continue in 2019,” said Peter Strandberg, ceo of Yara. To meet the demand the company is looking to hire another 60 – 80 employees in addition to its current workforce of 100.
“Market demand for our inline SOx exhaust gas cleaning systems, able to operate in both open and closed loop, is huge and growing. We have increased production by several hundred percentages at all our facilities in Europe, North America and Asia,” said Strandberg.
According to DNV GL's Overview of Scrubber Installations as of September there 1,320 scrubbers either ordered for or installed on vessels.
Yara's inline scrubbers can be installed in 10 – 20 days, which can be done in transit meaning there is no downtime due to the vessel being in dock.
