Five seafarers taken hostage in Nigerian pirate attack

Five seafarers taken hostage in Nigerian pirate attack
Lagos: Three seafarers from Sri Lanka and one each from Russia and Myanmar were taken hostage after 14 heavily armed pirates boarded a container vessel and breached its citadel, the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) has reported.

The Antigua and Barbuda-flagged container ship City of Xiamen container ship was some 45nm off the coast of southern Nigeria when it was attacked, said the IMB. The pirates escaped taking with with them the five crew members as hostages and cash taken from the ship’s safe.

The attack is the latest in a growing trend of piracy incidents in West Africa, and follows the recent attack on container ship Hansa Marburg.
