AD Ports to upgrade Aqaba operations with Port Community System

Maqta Gateway, the digital arm of AD Ports, will install a Port Community System (PCS) at Aqaba to boost the port city’s maritime and tourism industries.

The digital development builds on agreements signed between AD Ports Group and Aqaba Development Corporation (ADC) in December 2021 which included the formation of a joint venture company, Maqta Alya to develop and operate a PCS. The latest update for AD Ports said that Maqta Gateway will take a majority stake of 51% in the joint venture, with the remainder held by ADC. The system is expected to be operational within 12 months.

The agreement marks the first export of AD Ports’ PCS, a system which aims to improve communications and transactions between Aqaba ports, terminal operators, ADC, the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA), and other port stakeholders.

Streamlining port operations and services is expected to bring significant benefits to Jordan, as Aqaba handles around 80% of the country’s exports and 65% of its imports, including through the second-busiest Red Sea container terminal.

H.E. Hussein Al Safadi, CEO, Aqaba Development Corporation, said: “This agreement paves the way to significantly enhance communication among the ports’ various stakeholders, enabling transparency and predictability. We are delighted to strengthen our partnership with Maqta Gateway and are confident that Maqta Ayla will be highly instrumental in our efforts to enhance sustainable economic activity at one of Jordan’s most vital gateways.”

Dr Noura Al Dhaheri, CEO of Digital Cluster and CEO of Maqta Gateway, AD Ports Group, said: “This new agreement seeks to further strengthen our solid partnership with the Aqaba Development Corporation and fast-track our joint efforts towards digitalising the Port of Aqaba, making it more intelligent, resilient and cost-efficient. With digitalisation of ports’ processes; customer and stakeholder experiences will see a huge uplift, boosting trade and driving economic prosperity.”
