Port Hedland
The world’s largest dry bulk port in Hedland, Western Australia has been closed as category 5 typhoon bears down on the region.

In recent days Pilbara Ports Authority (PPA) has cleared vessels from Port Hedland in anticipation of the typhoon and as 10am on Thursday the port was fully closed and all berths and anchorages have been cleared.

PPA said the typhoon was expected to reach category 5 intensity as moved towards the Pilbara coast.

“A severe impact will occur along the coast and adjacent inland parts to the east of Port Hedland and west of Wallal Downs, most likely between Pardoo Roadhouse and Wallal Downs, later tonight or early Friday morning,” the authority said.

Port Hedland is a major load port for capesize bulkers and in 2022 and on average last year handled 501.m tonnes of cargo monthly of which 49.3m tonnes comprised iron ore exports.
