The Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) it was informed around 9am local time of 29 July that a worker had been found unconscious at the worksite for the second phase of the mega-port.
A worksite safety coordinator and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation and he was taken to hospital by the civil defence force. The worker died in the evening of the same day, the MPA said.
The worker was employed by Penta Ocean-Hyundai-Boskalis Joint Venture. No details of the incident have been revealed.
MPA said investigations are ongoing and that it was providing support to the family of the deceased worker.
Reclamation of the second phase of Tuas Port started in 2019. A total of 387 hectares is being reclaimed and an 8.6 km wharf structure is being constructed with 227 caissons that are fabricated on site.
Last year saw spate of workplace deaths in Singapore with the fatality rate increasing to 1.3 per 100,000 workers in 2022 compared to 1.1 per 100,000 in 2021, with construction the highest contributing sector for both fatalities and major injuries. A heightened safety period introduced by the Ministry of Manpower in September last year saw the fatality rate come back down to 1 per 100,000.
