Japanese shipbuilding group Japan Marine United (JMU) has closed its Ariake yard this week following a Covid-19 outbreak.

The temporary closure follows the discovery of a Covid-19 cluster among workers at the yard last week. An initial closure for four days from 30 July – 2 August has now been extended to 7 August in a move to stop the spread of the infection.

So far 80 workers have tested positive for Covid-19 out of a total of 551 tested. Some 308 have tested negative while results are being awaited for a further 163. Those infected include 50 JMU employees and 20 Vietnamese trainees. JMU said it was part way through testing 245 Vietnamese trainees.

The yard is only planned to resume normal operation on 17 August following summer vacation from 8 – 16 August.
