Chinese private shipbuilder Yangzijiang Shipbuilding has won contracts for 12 plus five newbuildings from Seaspan, worth $1.58bn in total.

The shipyard has secured agreements for building and delivery of 10 LNG dual-fuel 7,000 teu containerships and two 50,000 dwt MR tankers for a total contract value of $1.08bn with tonnage provider Seaspan.

In addition, Yangzijiang also signed letter of intent with Seaspan for another five dual-fuel 7,000 teu containerships which are expected to turn effective in August 2021.

Last month Seaspan announced it was ordering ten 7,000 teu, LNG dual-fuel containership newbuilds for charter to ZIM.

The dual-fuel containerships, are scheduled for delivery between 2023 and 2024, will be fitted with Type B LNG Fuel Tank, and Yangzijiang had participated in the design of the LNG fuel storage, supply system and LNG tanks as part of its research and development efforts.

These orders being first-of-its-kind, marks a huge accomplishment for Yangzijiang and is a clear representation of the shipowners recognition in the capabilities and technology towards the LNG tanks jointly designed by the group, said Yangzijiang.

Excluding the five vessels from letter of intent, Yangzijiang has secured new orders for 112 vessels worth $6.67bn year to date, the largest order wins - based on total contract value -  in the groups history.
