Belawan port sees 10% container traffic growth in Q3
North Sumatra’s main port of Belawan, saw container traffic grow by 10.2% in the third quarter with throughput in July–September reaching 680,828 teu up from 614,294 teu in the corresponding period in 2012, according to port operator Pelindo I.

Pelindo I spokesman Muhammad Eriansyah was quoted as saying in local reports that part of the increase in traffic was also due to newly installed cranes and other facilities at Belawan International Container Terminal (BICT).

“[The new equipment and facilities] help the port work more efficiently as well as handle more containers,” he said.

Eriansyah also updated that Pelindo I is continuing work on the BICT expansion project to accommodate more ships and help ease congestion at the port, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2016. The project is expected to bring an additional capacity of 800,000 teuss to the terminal. BICT has a total annual capacity of 1.2 million teus at present.
