The mega containerships, measuring 400 m in length and 30.5 m in depth, are scheduled to be handed over to its owner from the second half of 2014. At 18,400 per teu the five boxships are the largest ever ordered trumping Maersk Line's Triple E Class vessels, however, at price tag of $140m each they are some $50m per ship cheaper. According to Alphaliner CSCL has opted for a single engine rather than the twin engine concept chosen by Maersk.
The world's largest series of containerships, are able to reduce noise, vibrations and carbon emissions by automatically controlling fuel consumption to suit sailing speed and sea conditions.
“With this order, the Ulsan, South Korea-based shipbuilder has won orders for 10 ultra-large containerships this year including five 14,000 teu containerships from Seaspan Corp in January,” HHI said.
