HK container volumes continue to slide in the first half
The slide in Hong Kong's container handling is continuing as the year passes. According to official government statistics, in the second quarter of 2013, the port of Hong Kong handled 5.5m teu, 8% fewer than the previous corresponding period.

For the first half, the slide was consistent, also falling 8% from the year before to 10.7m teu. The second quarter saw a 40-day long port strike at Hong Kong International Terminals that resulted in lines diverting calls to South China.

Vessel arrivals fell 4% year-on-year in the second quarter to 7,460, although in terms of tonnage, there was virtually no change at 102.9m net registered tons. The number of river vessel arrivals decreased by 4% to 38,710, but in terms of tonnage, total capacity increased by 9% to 28.5m net registered tons.

For the first half, the number of oceangoing vessel arrivals decreased by 2% to 14,930, with total capacity also decreasing by 1% to 204.2m net registered tons. The number of river vessel arrivals decreased by 3% to 76,820, with the total capacity increasing by 5% to 53.8m net registered tons.
