NYK to invest in Shanghai Yangshan Phase 3

Tokyo: Nippon Yusen Kaisha has been provisionally admitted as an investor in Phase 3B project of the massive Yangshan container terminal at Shanghai port. The new phase is scheduled to begin operations in late 2008.
Under Phase 3 of Yangshan,, seven berths with a pier length of 2,600 meters will be built. In Phase 3A, four berths with a length of 1,350 meters will be constructed. In Phase 3B in which NYK will invest, three berths with a pier length of 1,250 meters will be built. NYK is expected to have shifted more than 500,000 twu through Shanghai in 2007 alone.
The investors in Phase 3A are SIPG, PSA International, China Shipping and CMA-CGM. In the first two phases, already operational, the terminal currently has nine berths with a water depth of 16 meters and a combined pier length of 3,000 meters. A total of 34 gantry cranes have been installed this far. [31/12/07]
