Petronas had earlier this year held a front end engineering and design (FEED) contest in which three companies participated and would lead to the eventual award of the EPCIC contract.
“They are namely, Berlian McDermott Sdn Bhd; Saipem (M) Sdn Bhd; and Technip-MMHE joint venture; via a front end engineering design (FEED) competition with subsequent rollover to EPCIC execution,” Petronas said in an announcement. Petronas said based on this process, the most competitive bidder was the Technip-MMHE joint venture. MMHE is a unit of Malaysian shipping company MISC, which is in turn majority-owned by Petronas.
Berlian McDermott is a joint venture between major US-based services provider McDermott and TH Heavy Engineering (THHE). There was speculation as recently as last week that it was close to winning the contract. THHE made a stock market announcement denying it had made such claims.
