The Costamare-owned boxship Rena grounded off New Zealand in October spilling 300 tonnes of bunker fuel, and later split in two.
The master and the second officer faced multiple charges under New Zealand’s Maritime Transport Act and Resources Management Act. In addition the master was later charged with four alleged offences under the Crimes Act, while three charges under the act were laid on the second officer. The charges under the Crimes Act each carry a maximum penalty of seven years.
Sentencing will take place on 25 May.
