Samalaju Port puts out $629m wharf project for bidding
The Samalaju Port project in Sarawak is well on track with Bintulu Port Holdings Bhd (BPHB) putting out for bidding a major MYR2bn ($629m) package. The wharf package, the biggest of the several packages, will involve the construction of five wharves to cater for handymax and handysize bulk carriers, local reports said.

“Tender for the wharf package closes next month,” Samalaju Industrial Port Sdn Bhd (SIPSB) head of operations Mat Salleh Mohd Etli was quoted as saying.

He added the four handymax wharves to be constructed could handle vessels up to 50,000 dwt. Three of the wharves are 210m in length while the fourth, 250m. The sole handysize wharf is 230m long and will cater for vessels up to 20,000 dwt.

“The five wharves are expected to be completed in 2016. By then, Samalaju Port will increase its cargo handling capacity to 18 million tonnes per annum,” he added.
