Statoil orders two drilling rigs from Samsung

Statoil orders two drilling rigs from Samsung
Norway's Statoil has gone to South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) to build two harsh environment drilling rigs.

The operational contract of the rigs will be for an initial period of eight years, with an option to extend for another 12 years. The value of the contract is around $153m.

The rigs, to be operated by KCA Deutag Drilling Norway, will contribute to the increase recovery and extended life of the Oseberg and Gullfaks fields, with operations due to commence by the end of 2017.

The rigs will be built to operate at water depths from 230-460 feet and drill wells to depths of up to 32,800 feet.

Statoil noted that the drilling of more wells is “the single most important measure” to increase recovery from the fields and to meet the company's ambitious target of an average of 60% recovery from the Norwegian Continental Shelf assets.
