The order for Wärtsilä “open-loop” scrubbers, which pumps in seawater to clean the exhaust gases before depositing the residue in a “sludge tank” for unloading at port, follows a similar order from Solvang for two scrubbers in December 2013.
Further, Wärtsilä has agreed to retrofit Solvang’s Clipper Harald with an open-loop scrubber in the summer of 2014. Solvang had previously taken delivery of two Wärtsilä scrubbers for two VLGCs Clipper Quito and Clipper Posh.
Wärtsilä will also supply a set of its Hybrid Scrubber Systems, which can operate in either open-loop or closed-loop, where the scrubbing water is continuously circulated and cleaned within the system, configuration, for four
Wilhelmsen Lines Shipowning Malta (WLSM) car carriers under construction at HHI’s Samho yard in Korea.
Another VLGC under construction at HHI for Greece’s Dorian LPG is to be outfitted with a Wärtsilä open-loop scrubber, after a contract signing in third quarter 2013.
Technical manager of HHI’s initial design department of shipbuilding division, Jae-Su Kim, said: "The acceptance of exhaust gas cleaning systems as a means of achieving compliance with environmental regulations is rapidly increasing. Wärtsilä is not only the leading supplier of such equipment, but is also able to provide all the technical and installation support needed.”
