Oslo-listed company said the 20,600 cu m vessels would used to carry ammonia and were priced at $51m each.
The newbuildings will be replacement tonnage for chartered-in vessels in Yara’s fleet
“Following an evaluation of current newbuild and time charter rates, Yara has chosen to build new vessels to replace existing time chartered vessels, covering part of its long-term transport requirement at attractive rates, meeting stricter environmental regulations and maintaining flexibility to serve Yara's production system,” the company said.
The company is to decide by the end of March on whether to opt for scrubbers or dual fuel options to meet 2015 sulphur requirements in emissions control areas.
Yara currently has a fleet of 16 – 18 chartered in vessels. The company said it was in discussions with potential partners for combined ship management and equity participation in the newbuilds although it would retain majority ownership.
