Armitt set to build new Thamesport terminal

UK shipping agent Armitt Group has signed a heads of terms agreement with Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) to build a new multimodal terminal at London Thamesport.

The Liverpool-based company aims to begin construction of the new 120,000 cu ft (approx. 4,000 cu m) terminal and warehouse, dubbed Armitt Multimodal Terminal South, this month. The company aims to start moving its first freight shipments as early as Q3 2016.

“What we are bringing to Thamesport, through this agreement, is our expertise in breakbulk handling, which is why Hutchison finds us attractive as a partner,” said Nicholas Marshall, commercial director at Armitt. “We see this deal as being the start of a very long-term successful relationship with Hutchison Ports.”

The project is the first in a three stage investment scheme by the Armitt Group, which will develop similar facilities in the Midlands and North of the UK within the next three years. The company is also in talks with HPH to secure an additional area at Thamesport handling aggregate cargoes for the construction industry within the area of M25 ring road around greater London.

“We also see the deal as a great opportunity to open up a new supply chain corridor to service European and Far Eastern markets, and it is a crucial link in our plans to develop a fully integrated supply chain across the UK,” said Marshall. “The investment also ensures we have access to an excellent deep water, rail-connected and un-congested facility that is important to the needs of our clients.”
