On top of individual donations Greek shipowners are donating EUR50 million to the flood victims in central Greece Thessaly region, the country’s breadbasket.

At an event organised in Athens by the Cyprus Union of Shipowners (CUS) 15 September, President Andreas Hadjiyiannis said that the amount will be donated after an initiative taken by the Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS).

Thousands of people have lost their homes and hundreds of thousands of animals have been lost in heavy rain and flooding in the region.

“We are moved by the pain of human losses in this tragic way. With a sense of duty towards our fellow human beings and society as a whole, the Union of Greek Shipowners took action so that the shipping family would contribute the sum of EUR50 million to those affected,” he said at a dinner attended by Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou and Cypriot counterpart Nikos Christodoulides.,
