The United Arab Emirates has established a national Marine Environment Protection Agency (MEPA), becoming the eighth member of the International MEPA movement founded by Greeceā€™s HELMEPA, which celebrated its 35th anniversary last year.

The Inaugural Declaration of UAEMEPA was signed by Khamis Juma Buamim, chairman of the Dubai Council for Marine & Maritime Industries (DCMMI) as well as ceo & md of Gulf Navigation, and HELMEPA director general Dimitris C. Mitsatsos during the Offshore Arabia event taking place in Dubai this week.

The signing ceremony took place in the presence of IMO secretary general Kitack Lim, who congratulated HELMEPA for spreading the volunteer spirit of MEPAs in their mission of preserving the marine environment.

Other MEPAs exist in Cyprus (CYMEPA), Turkey (TURMEPA), Uruguay (URUMEPA), Australia (AUSMEPA), North America (NAMEPA) and Ukraine (UKRMEPA).
