Ningbo-Zhoushan retains world’s busiest cargo handling port crown in 2020

China’s Ningbo-Zhoushan port posted a cargo throughput of 1.17bn tons in 2020, an increase of 4.7% year-on-year, retaining the title of the world’s busiest cargo handling port for the 12th consecutive year.

Container volume at Ningbo-Zhoushan port was 28.72m teu, an increase of 4.3% year-on-year, making it to be one of the three ports in the world to have exceeded an annual container volume of 28m teu following Shanghai and Singapore.

Currently, Ningbo-Zhoushan port operates 260 container shipping routes, including over 100 routes servicing for Road and Belt initiative. The port newly opened 16 sea-rail combined transportation operation spots and achieved over 1m teu sea-rail container volume for the first time in 2020.

Under the strategy promotion of internal circulation and dual circulation, Ningbo-Zhoushan port enhanced its services for Belt and Road regions and Yangtze river economic zone in the past year, which greatly improved the cargo handling volume of the port.
