The global shipping, logistics and marine services giant celebrated the century milestone in Dubai, deploying its eco-friendly HullWiper Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) on the Maersk Ganges at Jebel Ali Container Terminal.
HullWiper employs a high-pressure seawater system, mitigating damage to antifouling coatings and removing the need for divers, thus reducing operational costs and the risk to human life. Debris is collected in a special waste filter unit and disposed of ashore following strict, best-practice environmental guidelines.
All 100 hull cleans undertaken by Maersk Line – on vessels ranging from 1500 to 14,000 teu - have been conducted in either Singapore or Jebel Ali where GAC EnvironHull has special permission to operate the HullWiper in port waters.
Stephan Martinussen, Maersk Line¹s Head of Global Vessel Performance Centre, said the Hullwiper had increased the efficiency of the world largest container line.
"We place a high degree of focus to ensure world class bunker efficiency and thereby reduce our fleet¹s carbon footprint… hull performance plays a key role in achieving that objective,” Martinussen said.
AC EnvironHull md Simon Doran said: "Maersk has been a huge support since we started up and as we have grown along the way. They have been by our side all the way, and with our proved efficiency we wish to continue to repay that support and increase the benefits Maersk vessels can reap through proactive hull cleaning."
