CSSC Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding have inked retrofit project to install methanol propulsion on a CMA CGM container ship.

The methanol retrofit first alternative fuel vessel retrofit project for the shipyard. The project also marks CMA CGM and Beihai Shipbuilding making a step in cooperation and demonstrates our commitments to green ocean development, commented Beihai Shipbuilding.

Yao Hongshan, Deputy General Manager of Beihai Shipbuilding said that this cooperation, a historic leap of the shipyard in technology innovation, will significantly enhance Beihai Shipbuilding’s competitiveness in global ship retrofit market.

Methanol has rapidly become the alternative fuel of choice for container lines over the last year, however, most projects are for newbuildings rather than retrofits of existing tonnage.

CMA CGM and Beihai Shipbuilding started collaboration in 2018 for over 40 vessel projects. In 2021, CMA CGM ordered ten 5,500 teu boxships from Beihai Shipbuilding.
