A platform supply vessel (PSV) is set to get a containerised battery system as part of its conversion to a live fish carrier (LFC) in Turkey.

The system will be installed on a Firda Seafood Group vessel at Norse Shipyard Group in Turkey under a deal secured by Norwegian aquaculture technology supplier, Fjord Maritime.

Fjord Maritime will partner with Andorra-based marine battery manufacturer AYK, which has developed a containerised battery system for the ship. The battery-powered LFC will have a 1MWh energy storage system housed in a 20-foot container along with Fjord Maritime’s Hybrid solution.

AYK said the benefits of containerised batteries include not taking up space below deck, simple retrofit processes, swappable batteries, and the future proofing of an easily upgraded or replaced unit.

Ed Carney, global sales director at AYK Energy, said: “AYK has created what we consider to be the best containerised battery solution in the maritime industry.  Containerised batteries will be one of the biggest innovations in the maritime industry in the next five to 10 years specifically for the workboat, offshore, inland waterways and short sea shipping sector. The AYK containerised battery is safe, highly efficient and competitively priced.
