ClassNK granted its Innovation Endorsement certification to NAPA Fleet Intelligence and NAPA Performance Monitoring and Optimization, recognising the solutions’ value in furthering environmental and safety goals in line with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The certification was awarded in the Products & Solutions category, which covers digital equipment and software for vessels.
Nissen Kaiun has used the systems in question for several years, using operational data to improve safety and efficiency through better voyage planning. The Japanese shipowner also provided feedback to NAPA to help improve the products.
ClassNK has re-written the class certificates of all Nissen Kaiun’s ships using NAPA’s solutions, making them the first vessels in ClassNK’s register to hold its Digital Smart Ship notations (DSS(EE2)), the current framework’s highest level of ship performance evaluation.
A spokesperson for Nissen Kaiun said: “We are glad that ClassNK has made the third-party endorsement on [the systems’] functions and issued the highest ship performance evaluation, Digital Smart Ship (DSS(EE2)) to our ships equipped with NAPA. We would like to make an effort together to further develop the solution, to achieve optimal operations so that we can contribute to even greater reductions in CO2 emissions.”
Mr. Masaki Matsunaga, Corporate Officer, Director of Plan Approval and Technical Solution Division at ClassNK, said: “The cardinal concept of Innovation Endorsement is to carry out swift certification while developing necessary criteria in partnership with technological front runners. The certification of NAPA’s solutions and subsequent upgrades of notations installing the solutions could be the ideal model to certify innovations and their effectiveness driven by cutting-edge technologies.”
NAPA Fleet Intelligence uses weather data and NAPA’s 3D models on a cloud-based platform to advise on vessel performance optimisations through a browser. NAPA Performance Monitoring and Optimization adds in shipboard data from hardware to increase the accuracy of the same big-data-backed vessel performance and routing optimisation calculations.
