Greek owners top newbuild tally since 2010 with $51bn in orders

Greek owners top newbuild tally since 2010 with $51bn in orders
Greek shipowners have been the largest investors in newbuildings since 2010 according to Bimco shipping analyst Peter Sand.

Bimco said that since 2010 Greek shipowners have invested $51bn in newbuildings. Although Chinese owners topped the list in 2010 $17.3bn in contracts and Norwegian owners in 2012 with $17.8bn in orders driven by offshore, Greek investors have made consistent large investments in newbuildings which have continued into 2014.

“The Greek ship owners’ interest in newbuilding contracts has continued into 2014, where 73 new contracts valued at $4.3bn have been signed. Due to a focus on higher value ship segments, they consistently top China on value, despite losing out on the total number of contracts signed for all years but 2013,” Bimco’s Sand said.

So far this year Chinese owners have signed 98 newbuilding contracts.
