MOL, NYK sign charter deals to build LNG carriers

MOL, NYK sign charter deals to build LNG carriers
Tokyo LNG Tanker, wholly-owned by Tokyo Gas, has approached Japanese lines Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) and Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) to jointly build and own two new LNG carriers.

The two 165,000-cu m new ships will be built at Japan Marine United Corporation and they are scheduled for completion in 2017.

MOL and NYK have separately pencilled the deal with Tokyo LNG Tanker that involves a 20-year long term charter of the newbuildings.

The LNG carriers will be used to transport LNG mainly from Cove Point LNG Project in the US to Tokyo Gas facilities.

Both MOL and NYK said that the new LNG carriers would boast fuel efficiency and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
