Dubai: Grandweld, the UAE shipbuilding and repair specialist for vessels up to 80 metres, has won a contract to build a 25.9 metre new workboat for CGGVeritas Services of France. The new vessel is scheduled for delivery in the third quarter of 2009 from Grandweld's facilities at Dubai-based Al Jadaf shipyard.
The aluminium-hulled vessel will be built to a custom design for the owner and powered by two SCANIA diesel engines driving folding hydraulic thrusters installed at the transom, thereby allowing for shallow water operations during research missions.
The CGG contract joins a growing list of prestigious overseas orders for Grandweld, including Bourbon's order for four 100t bollard pull tug boats and a fifth 50.3mtr aluminium FSIV crew boat (pictured). Grandweld is also building for major local players such as Stanford Marine, (six 41mtr aluminium crew boats), and Sharaf Shipping, (two 24mtr aluminium crewboats). [10/02/09]
