Shell launches cylinder oil to tackle cold corrosion
Shell has launched a new cylinder oil Shell Alexia 140, with ultra-high BN number, designed to protect modern engines against cold corrosion and optimising feed rates.

The launch of the new cylinder oil with Base Number (BN) of 140 follows a no objection letter from MAN Diesel & Turbo, as well two major customers accepting it into fullscale operations. The highest BN in Shell's existing range of cylinder oils in BN100.

“After 18 months of exhaustive laboratory testing and field trials, we are delighted to introduce Shell Alexia 140 formally to market,” said Jan Toschka, Shell Marine executive director. “Its combined characteristics make it the right choice whether the owner wants to protect ultra-efficient engines against cold corrosion or optimise feed rates across vessel operating conditions.”

Panos Deligiannis, Neda Maritime Agency tanker technical director, commented: “We welcome the always pioneering character of Shell Marine that resulted in this latest addition to its comprehensive range of two stroke engine cylinder oils.”

Shell Alexia 140 is now available from the ports of Rotterdam, Bremerhaven, Hamburg, Antwerp, Tanjung Pelepas, Busan and Salalah.
