STX secures debut dredger orders

Seoul: STX Offshore & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. has succeeded in winning $150 million orders for dredgers. The company on October 5 has received two units of 11,800 DWT trailing suction hopper dredger and one unit of 6,500 DWT side stone dumping vessel from two affiliates of Jan De Nul Group (JDN Group). JDN Group, headquartered in Belgium and Luxemburg, is an international dredging and maritime engineering corporation. The recently received orders of trailing suction hopper dredgers and a side stone dumping vessel will be constructed in the company's Busan shipyard and delivered in 2011. ?Under the recent orders of trailing suction hopper dredgers, STX is to build a 119.1m long, 23m wide and 10.8m tall dredger to be used for removing mud and sand from the bottom of seashore, river and harbor. It is a cutting-edge model equipped with a suction pipe, used to remove materials, a dredge pump for pumping out materials, a hopper to move materials and a dynamic positioning system.?Side stone dumping vessel is a special ship which dumps stones into the bottom of seashore for land reclamation purposes. STX will construct a 115m long, 23m wide and 7m tall vessel for the recent order. ?It is the first occasion for the STX to receive orders of these two types of ships. Special ship orders are seen to be backing up commercial vessel orders in a nosedive.  [06/10/09]
