Svitzer Australia aids Eden residents fleeing fires
Towage company Svitzer Australia has helped come to the rescue of residents fleeing catastrophic bush fires that swept towards Eden on the coast of New South Wales.
Svitzer Australia posted photos on its Twitter feed of its vessels Mersey and Wistari in against a back drop of deep red/orange skies caused by the raging fires. Reports described conditions in Eden as “apocalyptic”.
Residents of Eden, New South Wales, were told to evacuate on Sunday, 5 January as raging fires reached the town. Svitzer Australia said that more 80 residents ranging from six months to 92-years in age took refuge on its vessels Wistari and Cooma moored at Eden wharf.
“The team made it safely through with several emergency callouts performed by Svitzer pilot boat Mersey. The sky is smoky over Eden and information about damage to the area is slowly coming through,” Svitzer said in one of the Tweets. “Our thoughts, and the thoughts of the nation, are with you.”
