Shipowner Berge Bulk is testing out solar power onboard one of its vessels to supplement its diesel alternators.

Berge Bulk has undertaken a test installation of solar panels capable of generating 100kW of electrical power onboard the vessel Berge K2.

The power from the solar panels is fed into the ship’s main electrical grid to supplement the vessel’s diesel alternators, Berge Bulk said in a LinkedIn post.

“Through the test, we are observing and assessing how the panels withstand the stresses while at sea and during in-port cargo operations,” the company said.

Assuming the pilot is successful Berge Bulk plans to move to 1,000kW solar panel installations.
