Pelindo I ties up with Port of Rotterdam for Kuala Tanjung project
Indonesian state-owned port operator Pelindo I has signed an agreement with Port of Rotterdam to provide consultancy services on service management at the new Kuala Tanjung Port in North Sumatra, local reports said.

“Port of Rotterdam will provide consultancy services to help us develop Kuala Tanjung to meet international quality standards,” Pelindo I spokesperson Muhammad Eriansyah was quoted as saying. Pelindo I president director Bambang Eka Cahyana said Kuala Tanjung Port will help boost the competitiveness of Indonesia's logistics sector as the ASEAN Economic Community, starts up by the end of 2015, as well as support the incoming government’s sea highway programme.

The port has been designated as the international hub for Indonesia's western region under the 2010-2025 National Logistics Blueprint (Sislognas).Kuala Tanjung Port is expected to begin operations 18 months after the groundbreaking, however is still awaiting Environmental Impact Analysis Documents (Amdal) from the Environment Ministry before it can begin construction.

“Since we are still waiting for the documents, we might not be able to start construction by the end of this year, as stated in our Masterplan. Hopefully, we can break ground by early next year,” Eriansyah said.

Pelindo I has also formed a joint venture with Dutch companies Van Oord Dredging and Marine Contractors BV to develop a shipping channel for Belawan Port in North Sumatra, in which it holds a majority stake. Pelindo I has secured a 70-year concession to operate the Belawan International Container Terminal (BICT).
