The 7,000 ceu was built by CIMC Raffles, ordered by Zodiac Maritime and then chartered to the Chinese automobile manufacturer BYD. The BYD Explorer 1 is the first car carrier operated by BYD’s for the export China-made vehicles.
BYD is the world’s largest of electric vehicles having surpassed Telsa in the fourth quarter of 2023.
The PCTC has a length of 199.9 metres, a width of 38 metres, and is equipped with a LNG dual-fuel propulsion system, which the company said marked a significant move toward cleaner energy solutions in automobile transportation market.
The vessel has loaded vehicles from north Chinese port of Yantai and will call at Xiaomo port in Shenzhen for the loading of further export automobiles before heading to Europe.
China exported 5.26 million automobile units in 2023 and BYD accounted for 242,800 exported vehicle units, a substantial growth of 334.2% year-on-year.
