The contract includes an option to order four additional similar class LNG carriers. The new double-hulled LNG carriers are slated to be delivered from the second half of 2016.
“We see this order as the first of many for LNG carriers as regulations for carbon dioxide emission tighten and demand for LNG increases as an alternative energy source,” said Ka Sam-hyun, executive vice president of HHI's shipbuilding division.
The tankers will be constructed with four independent self-supporting spherical tanks for higher performance when loading and unloading cargoes, and have greater resistance to sloshing forces compared to membrane tank system, according to HHI.
HHI claims that it is the only Korean shipbuilder that can build moss type LNG carriers. The Ulsan-based shipyard has built 15 moss type LNG carriers since 1994.
