A signing ceremony took place in Tokyo earlier this month between Sunrui, a subsidiary of China Shipbuilding Industry Corp (CSIC) and NYK. The contract covers retrofits for a wide range of vessel types including VLCCs, large bulk carriers, mega-containerships, and chemical tankers
NYK has been working with Sunrui since 2013 on fitting BWMS to newbuilds and retrofits to existing vessels and the latest contract represents a major commitment by the Japanese owner.
Jiang Renfeng, deputy general manager/chairman of CSIC and present at the signing, said the shipyard group was very honoured to establish such a strategic partnership with NYK, and CSIC.
Sunrui’s BWMS uses filtration and seawater electro-chlorination to remove micro-organisms from ballast water.
As the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Ballast Water Management Convention nears enforcement for existing ships in September next year owners are starting to place large scale orders to retrofit vessels with BWMS.
